General Information: The climate is generally warm and hot during the day but cold and chilly at some places in the evenings. Accommodation standards are good with en-suite in all rooms. Food is of European standard. Transport is by minibus or four-wheel drive and the road conditions are reasonable. There are special health requirements. Visas are required and cost either £35 in advance or $50 in Kenya. Only a moderate degree of fitness is needed. Photographic opportunities are excellent.

DAY BY DAY ITINERARY

​

Day 1: Nairobi
Arrival at the Nairobi Airport and transferred to your hotel in Nakuru. Dinner and Overnight in Nakuru hotel.

 

Day 2: Nakuru – Lake Bogoria – Baringo

After breakfast, we will proceed to the jewel of the Great Rift Valley, Lake Bogoria. Described as the "Most beautiful view in Africa" by Bishop Hannington, the lake is well known for its Hot springs and geysers, which are spread out along its southern shores. Here we will enjoy an extensive full day bird walk around the lake and the lodge area, here we expect to find a variety of dry country and alkaline lake species. We shall head for Baringo Hotel in the evening. Our dinner and overnight will be at Baringo Hotel. 

 

Day 3: Lake Baringo - Saiwa Swamp
Day 3 will see our birding safari depart Lake Baringo and drive towards Saiwa Swamp National Park in Kitale, it is the only Park in Kenya enjoyed exclusively on foot and birding landmark. Lunch will be served in Hotel at Kitale Town before afternoon bird walk. Dinner and overnight stay at a Hotel at Kitale Town.

Day 4: Kitale – Kongelai Escarpment

We will head out to Kongelai Escarpment after breakfast. It is is one of Kenya’s best hidden spots and one of the least visited, here we should find some great surprise species for our Western Birding Tour. We will start in the main escarpment, and make our way to Kanyarkwat area and Suam. In the afternoon, we shall try our luck at a local nesting site for the rare Heuglin’s Masked Weaver; a highly sort after species in Kenya. Dinner and overnight stay at a Hotel at Kitale Town.

 

Day 5: Kitale - Mt Elgon

On day 5 we'll leave kitale for Mt Elgon after breakfast and spend the entire day there searching for the local special birds and enjoying the mountain landscapes. This area is second to none in terms of pristine mountain forests, with some of the largest Podo trees in the country! We shall also get to enjoy some birding in the local caves, as well as the local mammals that call this mountain home. Dinner and overnight stay at a Hotel at Kitale Town

 

Day 6: Kitale- Kakamega Forest.
After an early morning breakfast we will leave for Kakamega Forest, it is a living remnant of the original equatorial rainforest, which once extended from Guinea in the west, to East and Central Africa for a fulfilling and eventful day of bird watching in this only & unique remaining rain forest with some of very rare and spectacular bird species. We shall start birding as soon as we reach, have lunch at the Hotel and head out again in search of more! Dinner and overnight stay will be at Kakamega Hotel .


 

Day 7: Kakamega Forest

We shall start early and enjoy a full second day of birding at kakamega forest, and add some of the elusive species that we might have missed the previous day. Dinner and overnight stay at Kakamega Hotel.

Day 8: Kakamega – Mumias – Kisumu

On day 8 we shall leave early and head for mumias in search of the rock pratincole. The Grasslands is full of many interesting bird species likely to be seen here. The grasslands are seasonally flooded in rainy season and are home to several range restricted or localized bird species. Of special importance is the Blue Swallow, which depends on these grasslands during non-breeding season. In the evening we shall head to Kisumu, Dinner and overnight stay in Kisumu hotel.
 

Day 9: Lake Victoria

We shall leave the hotel after breakfast starting with the area around the hotel. The water here is fresh with lots of life and the local farmland will be our major target. We expect many wetland and marsh species. As well as many species that have a range extension form Uganda. After lunch we will have a boat ride to access more of the lake in the afternoon. Dinner and overnight stay at Kisumu Hotel.

Day 10: Kisumu – Ruma national park

We'll be heading to one of Kenya's best kept secrets, Ruma National Park. With it's beautiful landscapes, ranging from riverine woodland and rolling savannah to magnificent escarpments and towering cliffs, Ruma National Park promises undiscovered wildlife treasures and undisturbed peace!  It's also Kenya’s last remaining sanctuary for the endangered Roan antelope. Overnight stay and dinner in Homa bay.

Day 11: Homa Bay – Masai Mara

We will leave early today from homa bay and head for the world renowned Masai mara game reserve. Described by many as not only the best National Reserve in Kenya, but the World!  Frankly, this place has it all. From Mass Migration of Wildebeest to the Big 5. And the best thing of all, the birding is exceptional with over 500+ species. Lunch, dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Day 12: Masai mara – Nairobi

After a relaxing breakfast, we shall briefly view the birdlife around the lodge and make our way back to Nairobi. There after a direct evening transfer to Airport for night flight or Nairobi hotel.
